Scary Movie 5 – Movie Review

My youngest daughter recently started 4K and, since we knew we wouldn’t be able to concentrate at work, my wife and I took off for her first day of school. We tried to kill the time by doing some grocery shopping and running some other errands. When we discovered we still had about 20 minutes to go, we decided to stop at the movie rental place a couple blocks from her school and picked out the film “Scary Movie 5.”

“Scary Movie” was the first movie my wife and I saw together as a couple and I have not failed to watch any of the sequels that followed that one. And, for the most part, I have enjoyed every one of them. However, this one just failed to click with me.

The movie, which primarily spoofs the films “Mama” and “Black Swan,” did have some funny moments. I especially liked some of the scenes involving the children and that early scene involving Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. However, it just seemed to lack some of the same magic that made the other “Scary Movie” installments much more enjoyable to watch.

I think the biggest problem with this film is the noticeable absence of Anna Faris and her Cindy Campbell character. I like Ashley Tisdale and she didn’t do a bad job filling in for Faris. But, the Campbell character gave the movies some sort of continuity/familiarity. Without her, there really isn’t anything to distinguish this film from the large amount of “Scary Movie” rip-offs that are out there and I think her absence might have limited the writers a bit too.

Since I did enjoy the previous four movies, I had been looking forward to seeing this film. But, after watching it, I have to say I was extremely disappointed. In fact, even though my wife and I did have some laughs, of the four sequels to the original “Scary Movie,” this is the one I regret spending my money on.
